New Providence clinches its first division title since 2021 with 42-6 win over Roselle

Jack Fitzgerald New Providence runs after the catch during the Metuchen at New Providence High School football game in New Providence, NJ, on Thursday, September 19, 2024.You would be hard-pressed to find a team in the state that has gotten off to a more dominant start than New Providence.

After outscoring its opponents 109-27 in its first three games of the season, the Pioneers weren’t about to take a step back. New Providence continued its rampage with a 42-6 win over Roselle at home to move to 4-0 on the season and clinch the Big Central Conference Patriot Silver division title. “It was a good effort tonight,” New Providence head coach Chet Parlavecchio Jr. said. “Roselle is tough. They’re never going to lay down for anybody. There’s a lot of good football players over there. I was proud of our boys.”“It feels good,” Reilly said. “It means a lot. We’ve been saying all week when you come back in 10 years you always want to see your name on the banners in the school as division champs. New Providence knew it had an outstanding ground attack, but in this game the Pioneers showed just how dangerous the aerial attack can also be. Quarterback Kevin Reilly tossed four touchdowns as he was able to showcase the plethora of weapons he has at his disposal. Squaring off against a Roselle team that was playing a lot of man coverage, it was the perfect opportunity for big plays. With the accuracy Reilly displayed, those chances would not be missed. “One thing we spent a lot of time talking about this offseason was we knew we had a good running game, but we need to show people we can throw the ball,” Parlavecchio Jr. said. “Tonight was a good indication that we have guys who can make plays down the field. Jack Fitzgerald can run with the ball. Danny Porretti has some great wheels." “It opens it up for A.J. Whitehead. I thought Roselle came in and tried to take away our run game, but we’re multi-faceted. We’re not one-dimensional." On the first Pioneers possession, Jack Fitzgerald ran a go route in which his defender fell down on, making it an easy pitch-and-catch as Reilly found him for a 29-yard touchdown that helped put them up 8-0. Reilly followed that up with perhaps his two best throws of the evening. On a crossing route to Daniel Porretti, a Roselle defender was lurking underneath it in good position, but Reilly put a high throw where only Porretti could get it for a 18-yard gain. Two plays later, Reilly and Porretti connected on a perfect back-shoulder throw for a 15-yard touchdown and a 14-0 New Providence lead with 11:40 left in the second quarter. “We just practice that during the week," Reilly said. “Back shoulder was just the only place to put it there.” The Pioneers got the ball right back in excellent field position after Roselle turned the ball over on downs. Reilly executed a play-action rollout and hit tight end James Keneally, who rumbled his way into the end zone for a eight-yard score to give his team a 21-0 lead with 8:59 left in the third quarter. Coming out of halftime, Fitzgerald got as easy a pick-six as you will find when miscommunication on the route by Roselle resulted in the ball being floated right into his hands. Fitzgerald ran untouched about 50 yards down the sideline for the touchdown as New Providence went up 28-0 at the 10:59 mark of the third quarter. Fitzgerald was not done yet as he took a wide receiver tunnel screen 33 yards for a touchdown for Reilly’s fourth touchdown pass of the game. Coming into the evening, the junior quarterback never had more than one passing touchdown game during a single game his career. Not to be overlooked, New Providence has been just as solid on the defensive side of the ball all season. “We played hard defensively," Parlavecchio Jr. said. “They have some physical linemen over there. I liked how we answered the challenge up front. Defense has been the strength of our team this year. We are really good up front and with our linebackers. Our secondary stepped up tonight too." With the way New Providence has looked through the first month of the season, the Pioneers certainly have the look of a team that can make some noise in Group 2.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
