Reggie Jackson on the future of the A’s in Oakland: ‘They’re not going to have a team here’

OAKLAND – The A’s days in Oakland are numbered, as far as Reggie Jackson is concerned.

The A’s, including their series finale with the New York Mets, had an average home attendance of 12,254 through nine home games, the lowest figure in Major League Baseball. Sunday’s game drew 17,645, the second-largest crowd of the season behind Opening Night on March 30. Former Oakland Athletics player Reggie Jackson shares a laugh with New York Mets manager Buck Showalter while in the dugout after a pregame ceremony honoring the 50th anniversary of the 1973 World Series team at the Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on Sunday, April 16, 2023.

The A’s have played at the Coliseum since 1968 and their lease at the stadium expires after the 2024 season. “It’s a matter of how soon do they go to Vegas,” Knowles said. “It’s kind of an unwritten thing, I guess, but it looks like it’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of when. But you can’t just pull up and move to Vegas. You need a place to play.”

Former Oakland Athletics player Vida Blue, center, is assisted off the field by his former teammate Joe Rudi, right, as John “Blue Moon” Odom, left, walks behind them during a pregame ceremony honoring the 50th anniversary of the 1973 World Series team at the Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
