These challenges are too big for one person or one administration to solve, Alex Tourk writes
It’s a new year, and with it comes a new mayor, elected with an enthusiastic mandate for change — with public safety and homelessness at the forefront.
San Francisco has been grappling with homelessness for more than a half-century. Since the deinstitutionalization of mental-health hospitals under then-Gov. Ronald Reagan, we’ve seen countless well-intentioned efforts and billions of dollars of service investment, yet we find ourselves here. Mayor Lurie campaigned on creating 1,500 new emergency-shelter beds within his first six months in office and I believe that an infusion of temporary, modular supportive housing can play a role in helping him achieve this goal.

San Francisco’s homelessness crisis is everyone’s problem. Government and nonprofits simply cannot solve it on their own. We need a collective effort, and it will take all of us coming together to work with the mayor and his administration.
