Interim chief says she’s retiring

Crispen, a 34-year department veteran who most recently served as a battalion chief, will take over for interim chief Sandy Tong .

The appointment is key for Lurie, who has repeatedly pledged to make public safety the cornerstone of his administration. Among his many responsibilities like responding to earthquakes and fires, Crispen will play a role in helping Lurie better coordinate The City’s street outreach efforts, which Lurie has signaled he’s eager to accomplish.

Tong told The Examiner she plans to retire. It is unclear whether she was considered for the permanent chief position. According to its Dec. 20 meeting minutes, The City’s Fire Commission met in a closed session and “voted on one or more nominations for appointment to the position of Fire Chief.” SF health officials say bird-flu risk ‘remains low’ after first US death Leaders preparing for trio of scenarios as H5N1 continues to spread
