Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed the rumors linking Alex Bregman to Boston, clarifying Rafael Devers' position as the team's third baseman. Cora expressed his vision for Bregman as a second baseman, potentially forcing other roster changes.
When you talk about rumors connecting Alex Bregman to the Boston Red Sox , you also must talk about what they could mean for Rafael Devers.Bregman has been tied to the Red Sox throughout the offseason. Some rumors indicate the longtime Houston Astros star would play second base in Boston; others suggest he'd stay at third base and force Rafael Devers to move across the diamond. In the latter scenario, Boston seemingly also would need to trade franchise first baseman Triston Casas.
However, during Fenway Fest last weekend, Red Sox manager Alex Cora set the record straight on Devers and how Bregman would fit in Boston.'Raffy Devers is our third baseman,' Cora told NESN's Tom Caron. 'Alex was a Gold Glover at third base and we all know that. In 2017, I had a conversation with him. He needed to play third because it was (Carlos) Correa and (Jose) Altuve. I always envisioned Alex as a Gold Glove second baseman.'His size, the way he moves -- it felt kind of like, 'You will be a second baseman.' But he has played third base at a high level, so we'll see where he ends up.'Signing Bregman to play second base would trigger other sets of dominoes for the Red Sox.Kristian Campbell, a consensus top 10 prospect in baseball, can play multiple positions but was developed as a second baseman. A long-term deal for Bregman likely would force Campbell to the outfield, assuming Devers and Trevor Story stay at third base and shortstop, respectively. It remains to be seen what any of this would mean for fellow top prospect Marcelo Mayer, who also can play multiple infield positions. For what it's worth, recent reports indicate the Red Sox could pass on signing Bregman in favor of trading for star third baseman Nolan Arenado
