A huge Star Wars & MCU fan, Kevin also loves Batman (because he's Batman), but could talk for hours about why Nightwing is DC's greatest hero.

2026's first Superman/Spider-Man crossover was just released this week, celebrating 50 years since the Man of Steel and Webslinger's first crossover back with 1976's Superman vs The Amazing Spider-Man #1.

The first of two crossover one-shots releasing this year from Marvel and DC Comics with Superman and Spider-Man, DC's Superman/Spider-Man #1 features everything you could want from a team-up between two of the most popular heroes from their respective universes . Here's our full breakdown of Superman/Spider-Man #1 and why it's a must-read for fans of both iconic heroes. Marvel & DC's Superman/Spider-Man #1: A Peak Universe-Spanning Crossover For Their Brightest Heroes The main story of Superman/Spider-Man #1 is “Truth, Justice, and Responsibility" from Mark Waid and Jorge Jiménez. Putting The Daily Planet's Clark Kent on an assignment with The Daily Bugle's Peter Parker, the story wastes very little time before Kent and Parker are running down an alley and suiting up as Superman and Spider-Man once their investigation reveals that none other than Doc Ock had his hands on a supply of kryptonite, and is also working with Brainiac. Being a single one-shot crossover story, the story from Waid does a great job establishing the stakes and jumping into the action rather quickly, while still taking the time to show just how effective Superman and Spider-Man are as partners. There's also a strong implication that this isn't their first team-up by any means, with the world being home to both Marvel and DC heroes simultaneously . Even before confronting their villains, the two heroes stop a runaway truck, saving civilians with seamless coordination. It’s a simple scene, but it perfectly captures who they are and how well they can operate as partners. Nevertheless, we also get a great"villain-swap" with Superman taking on Doc Ock's kryptonite-infused tentacles and Spider-Man out-maneuvering Brainiac's calculated strikes with his spider-sense. Ultimately saving the day, the story humorously ends with the reveal that Peter was paid significantly more by Perry White and The Daily Planet for his photos than he would have from J. Jonah Jameson and The Daily Bugle. Overall, this main story is incredibly fun, succeeding in its efforts to show Superman and Spider-Man working in tandem to save the day with a solid understanding of both leads. Although they're usually from different worlds, this new crossover story proves their iconic mottos might as well be interchangable: Superman and Spider-Man both care about truth and justice, while also having a keen understanding of the responsibility that comes with their great power. Superman/Spider-Man #1's Back-Up Stories Don't Miss Either While the main Superman/Spider-Man story from Waid and Jimenez is of course the main attraction, the various back-up stories in Superman/Spider-Man #1 are just as impressive and fun, featuring unique team-ups like Power Girl and Punisher, Superboy Prime and Symbiote Spider-Man, and even a televised debate between The Daily Bugle and Daily Planet. One of my favorites was"The World's Finest" from Tom King and Jim Lee, putting Mary Jane Watson and Lois Lane together while their significant others fight a Sentinel . Combined with a fun appearance from Gambit, it's really fun seeing MJ and Lois bond, including a fun reference to the fact that both Superman and Spider-Man have high-school/college sweethearts they've never quite been able to move on from . Funny enough, Gwen and Lana will be getting their own back-up story in Marvel's Spider-Man/Superman #1. Another major highlight comes from Sean Murphy who wrote and drew"Beyond the Cobwebs of Tomorrow", featuring the Legion of Superheroes' Superboy and Spider-Man 2099. However, there's also a surprise appearance of Batman Beyond, a futuristic team-up I SO wish had received just a few more pages. However, the most heartwarming story comes from Jeff Lemire and Rafa Sandoval's"The Bridge" featuring a flashback story where Jonathan Kent and Uncle Ben once met and worked together to save a family from a flash-flood, highlighting that despite coming from different universes, Superman and Spider-Man share very similar foundations in their origins, having both been shaped by strong mentors/adoptive fathers. I Can't Wait For Marvel's Spider-Man/Superman #1 In April DC's Superman/Spider-Man #1 certainly sets a high bar, combining top-tier creative talent with a clear understanding of what makes two of the most popular DC and Marvel characters so dang special and beloved in the first place. Nevertheless, I'm certainly hoping that Marvel's Spider-Man/Superman #1 releasing at the end of April will be just as good. Promising even more all-star creatives and brand-new backup stories, the main story will see Spider-Man and Superman joining forces again against their arch-foes Green Goblin and Lex Luthor in a story from Brad Meltzer and Pepe Larraz, a confrontation that's bound to be one for the ages. Beyond the previously mentioned Gwen/Lana backup story, we'll also be getting a Spider-Noir/Golden Age Superman team-up, the full Super and Spider families taking on Mysterio, Jane Foster's Mighty Thor joining with Wonder Woman during a symbiote attack, John Henry Irons' vs Hobgoblin, Miles Morales' Spider-Man teaming up with Superman, Spider-Gwen and Supergirl, and more exciting stories like a Spider-Man/Superman team-up from Jeph Loeb and Jim Cheung. It's going to be a lot of fun to keep the ride going in this new season of Marvel/DC collabs, an era I hope never ends now that it's back up and running. After all, it was over 20 years between last year's Batman/Deadpool crossovers and the last time Marvel and DC got together with JLA/Avengers. Overall, I've gotta give DC's Superman/Spider-Man #1 a 4.5/5. The only thing keeping it from getting a perfect score is that I really wanted some of the back-up stories to be a little more fleshed out . Other than that, the new Marvel/DC crossover absolutely delivers, a must-have issue for any comic book collection.
