Houston Academy finished as the Class 3A state runner-up, reaching the state championship game for the first time since 1973 when state title games were held at campus sites.
David Mundee BIRMINGHAM—In a wild fourth quarter that featured an AHSAA Super 7 championship record 49 points, a four-play sequence midway through proved too much to overcome for Houston Academy despite a gritty effort in the Class 3A state championship game against Mars Hill Bible.

While HA fell short, Mars Hill Bible earned its third state title in the last eight seasons. The Panthers finished with a 14-1 record. Often during Thursday’s game, Mitchell extended plays, avoiding the Mars Hill Bible rush and buying time for receivers to get open.
However, the Raiders couldn’t contain the Panthers’ powerful Wing T offense, which amassed 445 yards and six touchdowns with running backs Hudson Higgins, the game’s MVP, earning 200 and three touchdowns on 23 carries and Caden Chandler picking up 172 and two scores on 23 carries. It started four plays into the period when Higgins scored off the left side, cutting inside HA’s Soles Faulk at the goal line to score. Parker Kennemer added the point after kick to make it 29-22 Panthers with 10:26 left in the game.
HA was undaunted, racing downfield 64 yards in five plays with Mitchell hitting Hickey across the middle for a 39-yard TD pass with 4:47 left to cut the margin to 43-36. The drive was highlighted by a 20-yard Mitchell to Wilson Parrish completion to convert 4th-and-5.
