A rare printing of the Declaration of Independence is set to be auctioned off on January 24th at Sotheby's. Known as the Essex Broadside, the document is anticipated to fetch a price of up to $4 million. Printed in July 1776, the Essex Broadside is attributed to Robert Luis Fowle of Exeter. It is one of only 13 contemporary broadsides issued that year and one of just 10 known surviving examples.
Fowle's version of the Declaration is distinctive for its use of two columns, reminiscent of biblical texts. It also incorporates italic type into the opening headline and includes a few misspellings, as Fowle aimed to disseminate the news quickly. This specific copy of the founding document has a fascinating history, previously held in two prominent collections. The Streeter Collection, belonging to Thomas W. Streeter, is regarded as one of the most exceptional private collections of Americana ever assembled. The Sang Collection, from Philip and Elsie Sang, belonged to two Chicago collectors renowned for their interest in the Declaration of Independence. This rare printing of the Declaration of Independence is considered a cornerstone of American history, offering a glimpse into the pivotal moment when the United States declared its independence. The Essex Broadside, being one of the earliest versions to reach the public, not only captures the bold spirit of a nascent nation but also stands as a timeless emblem of American heritage. If the Essex Broadside sells at its high estimate, it will join the ranks of the most expensive printings of the Declaration. Sotheby's established the record back in 2000 when a Dunlap version sold for $8.1 million. Just last year, the second-highest price was achieved when a newspaper printing fetched $3.4 million, also at Sotheby's
