SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Good news: It appears the Rangers have elevated their talent floor. The flip side: It means they could very well lose talent if they must...

have elevated their talent floor.

“Bubba is really talented,” Young said. “His defense is a little bit ahead of his offense, but we’re confident in his ability to be a contributing member of our team. We recognize he’s still young and developing, but he’s ready for the challenge, whether that’s on opening day or sometime during the season is still to be decided.”In non-roster outfielder Travis Jankowski, the Rangers do have a veteran more than capable of playing center field.

Which brings us to this week’s class on Rosterology. It’s the “next guy up” edition. The roster must be malleable during the season to account for injuries. Here’s our look at who would likely be the next man up around the diamond:Next man up –Ragans has been the pitching star of early camp, but Chris Young made it pretty clear Monday by saying “our hope is that we have our five guys here. If we need a sixth man, he’d be an option.

Texas Rangers Chase Lee throws a pitch during the seventh inning of a spring training game against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, in Surprise, Ariz.Attractive as it might be to carry a third catcher, Sandy León is more suited for rare starts, but he’s not on the 40-man roster. Huff, 25, needs to play every day to continue development.he has started only 243 games behind the plate professionally over six years.

The decision on how to replace Taveras for however long he might need on the IL probably comes down to Jankowski or Frazier. Frazier loses out here because he’s a right-handed hitter. If the Rangers need to open with Taveras on the IL, it makes most sense to form a center field platoon with Thompson hitting from the right. Jankowski is the more capable center fielder and also left-handed. It just fits too easily.
