Christmas in South Texas typically involves warm weather and occasional rain, with snow being a rare occurrence. While a white Christmas happened 20 years ago, this year's forecast predicts temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Christmas in South Texas is unique. Sometimes, you’ll find people posing with Santa Claus in shorts and T-shirts, while on other years, the same folks are bundled up in jackets, gloves and hats. But one thing is certain: Snow on Christmas is a rarity in South Texas.

According to data collected over the decades by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal government’s umbrella agency for climate and weather, to experience at least an inch of snow on Christmas Day, you’d typically need to visit places like the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Idaho, Minnesota, Maine, upstate New York or the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. However, in one rare event exactly 20 years ago, the Texas Gulf Coast received its first-ever white Christmas. Places south and east of San Antonio, such as Corpus Christi, on Dec. 24, 2004, saw a remarkable 5 inches of snow with some higher amounts of up to a foot. Through this holiday week and this weekend, however, the weather across the state will be rainy and warm as a parade of atmospheric disturbances move across the Lone Star state. Meanwhile, air travelers leaving the Lone Star State may encounter delays because of storm systems bringing rain and snow to both the West Coast and the Eastern Seaboard. In San Antonio on Tuesday morning, we will wake up to overcast skies, light winds, and fog, with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. The first of a series of atmospheric disturbances will move over Texas during the day. It will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms ahead of a frontal system in the afternoon and throughout the evening. However, we can expect temperatures to be about 10 to 15 degrees above normal, with highs reaching the middle to upper 70s.
