It was the 35th annual Fourth of July celebration at the park.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A light rain marked the beginning of Independence Day festivities at Pioneer Park , but the damp atmosphere certainly didn’t dampen everyone’s spirits at Fairbanks’ hallmark July 4 event.“I just want to say happy Fourth of July. And thank God for this rain! Yay, yay rain,” U.S Rep. Mary Peltola said Thursday to an audience well-equipped with umbrellas and rain jackets.
Opening remarks from a series of local politicians and military leaders acknowledged the significance of this date, the 248th anniversary of the 56 delegates to the Second Continental Congress finalizing the Declaration of Independence.Following the ceremonial statements, it was then announced that Olivia Rodriguez — who runs the consulting firm that helps organize the Midnight Sun Festival — had won the second annual Golden Heart of the Golden Heart City award.
Balloon animals, facepainting and a free train ride drew the longest lines, as the younger members of the community gained inanimate pets, filled their cheeks with color and waved to bystanders as their trains breezed by. Kids also got to march their way through the park while the Red Hackle Pipe Band delivered celebratory sounds for a children’s parade, which picked up more and more participants as it circled the grounds.
