A ridge builds into Southcentral this week, with more sunshine in the forecastANCHORAGE, Alaska - A quieter weather pattern is heading tothis week, as a ridge of high pressure is set to take hold. The ridge is set to arrive by the middle of the week, slowly warming temperatures. But before the ridge truly builds into the region, showers and stray thunderstorms are still a possiblity.
An area of low pressure just to the southeast of Kodiak will continue to march northeast through the Gulf of Alaska. As it passes south of Anchorage, spotty to isolated showers will remain in the forecast for Southcentral. There’s a small chance for a rogue thunderstorm or two in the valley, but that will all depend on the high temperatures. Expect many areas to warm anywhere from 45 to 57 degrees through the afternoon hours.
Ice jams and river breakup are still well underway, with the latest reports showing the biggest concern continues to be along the. An ice jam just south of Johnson River is causing flooding concerns, with any fluctuation in the water levels likely to lead to additional flooding. Continued monitoring of the ice jam is advised as additional flooding is possible. The flood warning remains in effect until Tuesday afternoon.
Looking ahead through the rest of the week, warmer and drier weather looks to return to many areas. A ridge of high pressure building in from the southwest will lead to steadily rising highs. It’s likely that by the middle of the week, some areas across Southcentral will top out in the upper 50s.
