Tarantino was willing to play by Eon's rules.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Quentin Tarantino almost directed Casino Royale, and while it would undoubtedly have been one of the best James Bond movies, it would also have ruined Daniel Craig's tenure as 007. Tarantino is one of the most talked about filmmakers working today, having directed some of the most celebrated movies of the 1990s and the 21st Century, including Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, and Django Unchained.

The movie would have been confusing to audiences at first, as the direct sequel to the George Lazenby movie would have been starring Pierce Brosnan, and that would have been after four Pierce Brosnan movies had already been released. However, with a little explaining in its marketing, the idea would have made for a perfect standalone Bond movie.

Tarantino would have made the movie with a much smaller budget too, as the Brosnan Bond movie's inflated budgets were getting out of hand. Most shockingly, however, was the fact that Tarantino was even willing to play by Eon's rules. Tarantino revealed that he'd have been willing to set the movie in the modern day if the studio demanded. It's almost as if Eon was gifted the perfect screenplay and the perfect director who was willing to play by its rules only to reject everything.
