Frustrated Queens residents are urging the Trump administration to intervene in what they describe as a surge in crime along Roosevelt Avenue, allegedly perpetrated by homeless migrants. The residents, led by former state Senator Hiram Monserrate, claim that local authorities have failed to adequately address the issue. Queens residents frustrated with the conditions along Roosevelt Avenue are hoping the new Trump administration will offer assistance in addressing what they perceive as a surge in crime linked to homeless migrants . A group of locals, including former Democratic state Senator Hiram Monserrate, drafted a letter to President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, on Tuesday, requesting federal intervention. They argue that state and local authorities have been insufficient in improving safety.
The letter, addressed to Homan, who is leading a mass deportation operation, describes the situation in Corona, Jackson Heights, and Elmhurst as “outrageous.” It claims that over the past seven months, the community has confronted a wave of lawlessness that began approximately a year and a half ago. Roosevelt Avenue has been plagued by homelessness and criminal activity allegedly perpetrated by dozens of migrants. Residents report incidents of drug dealing, harassment, theft, and lesser offenses like public intoxication, littering, and urination. During a press conference on Tuesday, community leaders added that there have been instances of assault and the proliferation of brothels, significantly impacting residents’ sense of security and quality of life. One barbershop, Los Primos Barber Shop, was forced to close due to 50 homeless individuals occupying the storefront, making it impossible for the business to operate. Monserrate, who was convicted of a misdemeanor assault charge in 2010, stated that the situation is unacceptable in any part of America, let alone Queens County. He pointed to the barricaded triangle in the community, which was used as a makeshift home and bathroom by the homeless, as a stark example of the problem. Monserrate, along with other activists, wants the Department of Homeland Security to visit their neighborhoods, assess the level of criminal activity, and take appropriate action, including deportation.The letter, signed by Monserrate and Mauricio Zamora of the community group Neighbors of the America Triangle, directly appeals to the federal government because sanctuary city laws prevent local authorities from collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While the city and state have increased police presence in the community, it has not effectively resolved the issues plaguing the corridor, according to the letter. Residents expressed their concerns, with longtime Corona resident Toni Diaz stating that, despite being an immigrant herself, she feels unsafe due to the actions of these individuals. She emphasized that women are forced to cross the street to avoid harassment and called for federal intervention to “clean up our area.”
