Queen Elizabeth II is being mourned by her family, fans and admirers. In Britain, her death at age 96 has thrown a state apparatus into motion that has sat idle for 70 years — since Elizabeth's father, King George VI, died in 1952. She called the monarch "the nation’s greatest diplomat" and said her devotion to duty was an example to everyone. When the queen appointed Truss, the prime minister said, "she generously shared with me her deep experience of government, even in those last days."
Elizabeth was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a symbol of constancy in a turbulent era that saw the decline of the British empire and disarray in her own family. Members of the royal family had rushed to her side at the family’s summer residence in Balmoral after her health took a turn for the worse.
"Charles can never replace her, you know, and that makes sense," said 31-year-old Londoner Mariam Sherwani. In the years after she became queen in Kenya, tens of thousands of ethnic Kikuyu were rounded up in camps by British colonizers under threat from the local Mau Mau rebellion. Across the continent, nations rejected British rule and chose independence in her first decade on the throne.
