The 73-year-old Prince of Wales acceded to the throne on the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II at her home in Balmoral, Scotland, on Thursday. She was 96.

There had been speculation that the new king would use a different title. The monarch, whose full name is Charles Philip Arthur George, could have followed the example of some of his predecessors by choosing one of his other names as his title. His grandfather Prince Albert of York, for example, used the title King George VI when he acceded to the throne in 1936.

In a statement delivered outside Downing Street, the U.K.’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. She ended by saying, “God save the King,” a phrase which hasn’t been used in the U.K. since the death of King George VI in 1952.
