Canandaigua, N.Y. — The power of purple is going a long way in helping survivors of domestic violence. First responders joined community partners and service providers Thursday, all dressed in purple, outside the Ontario County Courthouse. The goal of the Purple Thursday event is to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month and show survivors they're not alone.
"If it's not you that's been a victim of domestic violence, you know somebody who has been," said Jessica DeFazio, director of advocacy services at. "One in four women, one in seven men have been victims at some point in their lives. It's a public health issue and concern. It's something, as said, is a secret, it's kept hidden. We want to bring it out into the public and say we see you, we hear you and we're here to help.
