Recently, I had the pleasure of pet-sitting my son’s 6-month-old puppy. She’s a large-breed retriever, already tipping the scales at 45 pounds, and I was excited to spend some time with her. But it had been 15 years since I had raised a puppy, and I was quickly reminded of just how much work they are. She is house-trained, so the main challenge all weekend was her constant need to chew on everything, including the dining room table legs.
At one point, she grabbed a shrink-wrapped bag of screws and washers — my heart stopped for a second. If she punctured that bag and the contents spilled into the grass, I’d never find them again. That was when I decided it was time for her to nap in her kennel in the house so that I could finish the project. Her energy throughout the weekend was constant; just like a baby, I rested when she did, though her naps were never long enough.
