Frank Castle aka the Punisher bleeds while shooting guns on a red background
Frank Castle is back in his prime, as the Punisher's closest ally officially returns at the same time as his biggest enemy. It's increasingly clear that 2026 is the Punisher's year, considering that Jon Bernthal's MCU anti-hero is making his feature-film debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and starring in his own Special Presentation, The Punisher: One Last Kill within the span of two months.
Frank was similarly busy in 2025, having appeared in a major role in Daredevil: Born Again season 1, and starred in Marvel Knights: The Punisher and Punisher: Red Band. The latter comic series put him in direct conflict with Daredevil and Spider-Man's MCU villains, Kingpin and Tombstone, and yet he lived to tell the tale. The Punisher's Right-Hand Man Micro Is Back Helping Frank Castle Punisher #2; Written by Benjamin Percy; Art by Jose Luis Soares & Oren Junior Frank Castle has survived yet another impossible trial, and both Kingpin and Tombstone are out of the picture. However, the Punisher is still heavily afflicted by the surgery Wilson Fisk performed on Frank to transform him into a mind-controlled assassin. Frank is desperate, and the only person who may be able to help him is his friend-turned-enemy-turned-victim David Linus Lieberman a.k.a. Micro. In Punisher #1, Frank frees Micro. In issue #2, the Punisher and Micro are finally an official duo again. Getting rid of his painful seizures is the Punisher's top priority at the moment, but Micro may become even more important for Frank Castle once he regains control of his own brain. With Billy Russo aka Jigsaw back, Micro's technological prowess may be essential for the Punisher and his archnemesis' inevitable confrontation. This reunion between Frank, Micro, and Jigsaw takes things back to the Punisher's origins. The Punisher And Micro's Story Is Long And Erratic Micro Is Both An Ally And An Enemy Frank Castle and David"Microchip" Lieberman's relationship has been complicated, to say the least. For nearly one hundred issues of the original The Punisher comics, Micro is the indispensable architect of Frank’s war on crime, providing the high-tech weaponry, encrypted communications, and money-laundering expertise that transformed the lone gunman into a one-man paramilitary force. However, Micro possesses a moral compass that Frank long ago discarded. While Frank Castle sees his mission as an eternal bloodbath, Micro increasingly views it as a fixable problem, leading to friction. Micro goes from Frank’s greatest ally to one of his most personal enemies during the Punisher's rehabilitation arc in The Punisher #100, where Micro decides that Frank has become too unstable to continue his mission. In a move of ultimate betrayal, Micro locks Frank in a high-tech cell and attempts to replace him with a new, more controllable Punisher named Carlos Cruz. The tension culminates when the rogue SHIELD agent Stone executes Microchip while Frank watches. Related The Female Punisher: Marvel's Forgotten Anti-Hero Could Be Key For The MCU While Rachel Alves may not be as famous as Frank Castle, the female Punisher is just as deserving of the title, and the skull she wears alongside him. Posts By Andrew Dyce During the Rick Remender run of The Punisher, a resurrected Microchip allies himself with The Hood and uses his intimate knowledge of Frank’s tactics to dismantle the Punisher’s life. Micro goes as far as to exhume the bodies of Frank’s family and offer to resurrect them using dark magic. Micro is the only character who truly understands the mechanics of Frank Castle’s soul, which makes him both the most effective support system the Punisher has ever had and the most dangerous traitor he's ever faced.
