The Trump administration criticized President Joe Biden's support for transgender people on Easter Sunday in 2024.
In a press release on Tuesday, the White House said that"this Easter season" it was celebrating a"decisive victory". Not that of Jesus as celebrated by Christians at Easter, but"the swift and unrelenting dismantling of subversive, woke policies that endangered children, eroded women’s rights, assaulted common sense, and dragged America toward moral and cultural decline.
"marking Transgender Day of Visibility, which always falls on March 31, and that year it also happened to be Easter Sunday. Biden had"desecrated" Easter, the message said, by elevating"radical leftist ideology". The release went on to list the ways President Donald Trump and senior officials had rolled back transgender health care, and declared there to be only two genders, male and female, assigned at birth.Criticizing and dismantling transgender protections has been one of President Donald Trump's core policy points over the past 14 months, having promised to end allowing"men in women's sports" and the"surgical mutilation of minors", when referring to gender-affirming care. Those moves have garnered support among voters, largely among Republicans, although many Americans still want to see LGBTQ+ people have equal rights. On March 31, 2024, former President Joe Biden made an announcement on Transgender Day of Visibility, saying,"Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans: You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back." That message caused outrage from Trump's then campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt, now White House Press Secretary, who said that it was "appalling and insulting" that Biden"proclaimed Easter Sunday as 'Trans Day of Visibility'". Others within the Republican Party, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, criticized the announcement.:"As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American. Sadly, it's unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit." Biden had issued similar proclamations each year of his presidency on March 31. He also issued Easter wishes in a separate message on March 31, 2024. Two years later, the Trump White House also linked its message on transgender issues to"this Easter season", but the press release issued Tuesday gave no other mention of the core topic of the Christian holiday, instead focusing on the sweeping efforts to roll back Democratic Party efforts to support transgender people and healthcare. The list included Trump ending"the unfair, demeaning practice of forcing women to compete against biological men in sports", the return of the transgender ban by the Pentagon, legal action taken against states providing gender-affirming care and services, and ending self-identification on U.S. passports. Multiple lawsuits have been filed over the current administration's efforts, and some Democrat-led states and cities have promised to continue to uphold protections for trans people.in his holiday messages. In December, he wished, "Merry Christmas to all, including the Radical Left Scum that is doing everything possible to destroy our Country, but are failing badly." He used a later message to say Democrats were on"These bold actions have shattered years of Democrat extremism, rescued a generation of children from irreversible harm, restored biological truth, and reclaimed America’s commitment to fairness, science, and sanity.""Trans rights are human rights. This Transgender Day of Visibility, we honor the resilience of transgender and nonbinary Americans and celebrate their incredible courage."Hard to believe this atrocity was two years ago today. Thank God for @POTUS and biological truth.""Trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people have always been here — from the hijra of India to the Diné nádleehi to the leaders who built the modern LGBTQIA+ movement here in New York. Your existence is not up for debate. Your lives are not a political issue.
