David Mundee Facing an explosive Abbeville offense, Providence Christian head coach Kenny Keith and his staff decided it was a night for pound-and-ground.
“That was the key to the game in the second half,” Keith said. “I was proud of how the offense came out in the second half. We had to have a drive to start the second half and we did what we needed to do because they are very explosive. Calvin McClintock followed with 74 yards on eight carries, quarterback Craig Pittman added 70 yards rushing and a touchdown on 12 carries and Kyser Sims had 64 on 13 carries. Pittman had 56 of his yards in the second half and Sims had 57 of his in the final two quarters.
“We stopped the run really well and we had some sacks, but they made explosive plays,” Keith said. “They get out there in space and they are hard to hem up. They have speed everywhere.”After an Eagle punt of 53 yards flipped the field early in the first quarter, the PCS offense capitalized on a short field at the 44 after the defense forced a three-and-out.
Abbeville, though, struck on its next possession as quarterback Xavier Harris hit Jamarion Smith downfield on a long pass and Smith split two PCS defenders before racing to the end zone to complete a 46-yard scoring pass with 1:03 left before halftime. A try for two failed.
