A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that individuals who adhere to a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce their risk of developing coronary heart disease, even if they have a genetic predisposition to abdominal obesity.

Excess belly fat is a known risk factor for heart disease, but new research suggests that prioritizing a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce this risk. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the relationship between waist-to-hip ratio (a measure of abdominal obesity) and coronary heart disease in over 280,000 participants from the UK Biobank study.

The researchers looked at the impact of five healthy lifestyle factors: not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption (fewer than three drinks per week), regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and a nutritious diet.Over a median follow-up period of 13.8 years, the study recorded over 11,500 cases of coronary heart disease. The results showed that individuals who adhered to four to five of these healthy lifestyle factors had a 25% lower risk of developing coronary heart disease compared to those who did not. Notably, these lifestyle factors proved effective in reducing risk even among participants with a genetic predisposition to a high waist-to-hip ratio.These findings underscore the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle for heart health. Even if you have a genetic inclination towards abdominal obesity, making positive changes in your diet and exercise habits can significantly lower your risk of heart disease. The study emphasizes that prioritizing a healthy lifestyle, including not smoking, moderating alcohol intake, engaging in regular physical activity, ensuring adequate sleep, and consuming a nutritious diet, can have a profound impact on your overall well-being and cardiovascular health
