This North Texas city, one of the fastest-growing in the nation, initially implemented the temporary halt on construction in September. The moratorium was set to expire on January 21st, but during the first city council meeting of the year, councilmembers voted to extend it for an additional six months.
City officials cited strained utilities as the primary reason for the extension. Princeton Public Works Director Tommy Mapp explained that the city needs to develop a comprehensive plan to upgrade its water, sewer, road, and emergency services infrastructure before accommodating further residential expansion. The city's current utility systems are operating at capacity, and officials believe that additional growth could exacerbate existing infrastructure challenges.Mayor Pro Tem Steven Deffibaugh, who has witnessed two significant growth spurts in Princeton during his time as a resident, acknowledged the challenges associated with rapid expansion. He recalled the city's modest beginnings in 1982, when the population was just 1,200 and US 380 consisted of only two lanes. Today, Princeton's population has exploded to over 28,000 residents, earning the city the title of the third-fastest growing city in the country last year. While recognizing the economic benefits of growth, Deffibaugh emphasized the importance of planning and infrastructure development to ensure the city's long-term sustainability. Developments already under contract before the moratorium in September will be allowed to continue construction.
