When you think about ballerinas, you probably think about graceful dancers, baby pink tutus and toe shoes, and otherworldly choreography… not dancers roundhouse-kicking would-be assassins across the face and wielding knives and guns.
But that's the premise of the upcoming action movie, whose tagline is “Blood, sweat, and tutus.” If you're in the mood for a high-energy, tense, and twisty thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you laugh a little too, Pretty Lethal should be on your springtime to-watch list. It has echoes of Yellowjackets and famous horror movies like Ready or Not, plus plenty of ballet scenes and references for dance fans and current and former dancers alike. Pretty Lethal is an action thriller about a group of the “world's best dancers,” who are invited to a showcase in Budapest when their bus breaks down. They end up finding shelter from the storm at a massive mansion owned by Uma Thurman's character, and things quickly take a turn for the worse. Soon, the dancers find themselves trying to escape from serious danger, and they have to rely on their wit, teamwork, and dance skills to fight for their lives. Director Vicky Jewson told Elle about the film, 'We’re crossing multiple genres here, and sometimes within 30 seconds of each other. How can we do that in a way that feels elegant? But, at the same time, I wanted to be able to share in the joke with the audience, to be self-aware enough that we’re not taking this too seriously.” The cast is packed with some of our faves, including Mean Girls star Avantika, who plays Grace; To All the Boys I've Loved Before actor Lana Condor as Princess; Iris Apatow as Zoe; Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler as Bones; and Millicent Simmonds as Chloe. Uma Thurman plays Devora Kasimer, a former dancer with what appears to be a mean streak. The film will premiere at SXSW on March 13 and hits Prime Video on March 25, so you don't have too long to wait! The movie has been through quite a journey, and a few names were attached to star before the cast was finalized. It was directed by Vicky Jewson and written by Kate Freund. Yes!
