Staff Reports With a five-run lead, Cottonwood was one out away from a split in its Class 2A second-round series on Friday night against Pike Liberal Arts.The Patriots had eight straight batters reach base off four Cottonwood pitchers – five off hit by pitches -- in scoring six runs for a wild, dramatic 9-8 walk-off victory over the Bears to complete a sweep.The Patriots advanced to the third round and plays Bayshore Christian at home next week. Bayshore Christian swept G.W. Long on Friday.

Simmons was lifted in favor of Jaxxon Davis, but pinch hitter Garrett Whitaker greeted him with a two-run double on a 2-2 pitch to tie the game at 8-8.Eli Jones was summoned in to pitch, but Houston Gunter was hit by a pitch on a 2-0 pitch to force in Whitaker to give Pike Lib a walk-off 9-8 win. In the opener, the Tigers, behind four-run sixth and seventh innings, broke a 5-5 tie and beat Houston Academy 13-5.In the second game, HA scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Tigers eased out in front with single runs in the first, third and fourth. The Raiders tied it in the top of the seventh on an Adam Boyd run-scoring single. Thomasville, though, won it in the bottom half.

Ballard was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings, striking out six and allowing six hits and four runs with only two runs earned.
