A major data breach involving the software company PowerSchool has compromised the personal information of millions of students and teachers across the United States, including some social security numbers and medical information.On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool became aware of a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized exportation of personal information from certain PowerSchool Student Information Systems with Ohio schools among those impacted.
PowerSchool said it is working with CrowdStrike to better understand the facts surrounding this incident and plan to share information and intelligence with our customers directly "We have reason to believe they have student data information from 1996," Mark Troutman from Gibbs Law Group said, "That means if your school was using PowerSchool almost 30 years ago, your info could be compromised. When you have critical data about people, you should get rid of it when you don't need it any longer."
White is particularly worried about the potential impact on his children's futures. According to the federal government, thieves can use your child's information to open a bank account, take out a loan, apply for benefits or sign up for utilities and you may not know until your child is denied for a college loan.
In Ohio, you can place a credit freeze on your credit report with any or all three major credit reporting agencies. Parents also can freeze their child’s credit record to help guard against child identity theft. A credit freeze essentially puts a lock on your credit, so new creditors can’t access your reports.Read all notifications from the company. Use multifactor authentication, which requires an additional step after you log into your account – such as a text to your cellphone – to gain access to that account. Multifactor authentication provides an extra layer of security.
