Porsche is reportedly developing a hybridized version of the 911 Dakar coupe, set to debut in 2026. The lifted 992.2 model will feature a powerful 543 hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine combined with a 1.9 kWh battery. This hybrid powertrain promises to enhance both on-road and off-road performance.
Porsche is reportedly gearing up to unveil a hybridized iteration of the 911 Dakar coupe in 2025. According to sources within the company, the lifted 992.2 model will boast a potent 543 hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine coupled with a compact 1.9 kWh battery. This hybrid powertrain is expected to propel the Dakar to new heights, making it a formidable force on both tarmac and off-road terrains.
Rumors suggest that the 911 Dakar will debut at the end of 2025, marking it as a 2026 model year (26MY) offering. While Porsche has remained tight-lipped about these speculations, insiders have hinted at the return of this innovative, rally-inspired sports car. The original 911 Dakar, launched in 2022, took the 911 in a daring new direction, embracing a lifted design and off-road capabilities. Now, with the addition of hybrid technology, the 911 Dakar promises to be even more exhilarating.Unlike its predecessor, which relied on a 3.0-liter flat-six engine, the updated Dakar will utilize the electrically-assisted 3.6-liter powerplant developed by Porsche for the new 992.2 GTS. This marks the first time a hybrid powertrain has been integrated into a 911. The upgraded engine, paired with the electric boost, delivers a significant power surge compared to the original Dakar. While the previous 3.6-liter engine produced 473 hp (480 PS) and 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of torque, the new hybrid system generates 53 hp (54 PS) and 110 lb-ft (149 Nm) of additional electric power, resulting in a total output of 543 hp. This enhanced performance is expected to translate to quicker acceleration times, potentially rivaling the 2.9-second 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint achieved by the hybrid GTS. The new Dakar will retain its signature all-wheel drive system and 8-speed PDK paddle-shift transmission. However, its small 1.9 kWh battery capacity will not allow for purely electric driving. Porsche has previously limited the production of the Dakar to 2,500 units, and it is highly anticipated that the new hybrid version will also be produced in limited quantities. The price is expected to rise from the $220,020 starting price of the previous model to around $250k, before any optional extras are added. The production run of the original Dakar concluded in November 2024, with the final car sporting the distinctive yellow and blue livery of the 1984 Paris-Dakar rally-winning 911 driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne. This unique paint scheme, executed entirely by hand by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (special wish) division, was a testament to the brand's dedication to creating bespoke and unforgettable automotive experiences.
