Porsche is evaluating its electric Macan launch strategy due to recent fluctuations in the EV market. The company is considering offering a new generation of gasoline-powered Macan or incorporating a plug-in hybrid powertrain into the electric version.
Porsche initially planned to launch the all-electric Macan EV in 2024, gradually replacing the gasoline-powered version. However, recent fluctuations in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with sales showing volatility in certain regions, have prompted Porsche to reconsider its strategy. According to reports from Autocar, Porsche is exploring two potential options. First, they might introduce a new generation of gasoline-powered Macan .
Alternatively, they could modify the electric Macan to include a plug-in hybrid powertrain, utilizing a gasoline engine as a range extender. This approach is gaining traction in the automotive industry, with brands like Volkswagen Group's Scout, Stellantis' Ram, and General Motors all incorporating range-extender technology into their future models. The electric Macan has seen a promising start, selling 18,278 units since its launch in the fall of 2024. Porsche remains cautious about these figures, acknowledging the significant sales decline experienced by the Taycan after its initial surge in popularity. While Porsche previously aimed for 80% of its sales to be electric by 2030, they revised this target last summer. This suggests a longer coexistence of gasoline-powered and electric models than initially anticipated. The future of the gasoline-powered Macan remains uncertain. Production was slated to end next year, but Porsche's current evaluation may lead to a continuation. In contrast, Porsche confirmed last summer that the Cayenne will retain a gasoline version beyond 2030, alongside its all-electric counterpart scheduled for 2026. A similar strategy could be implemented for the Panamera and 911
