The greenbox program at Avon Lake parks is very popular.
Published: Jul. 12, 2024, 11:48 a.m.Rodger RoeserAVON LAKE, Ohio - It’s summertime in Avon Lake, and the city’s very popular Greenbox program is coming to a close at the various city parks, ending July 26. The annual tradition of the Greenbox began more than 60 years ago and is a city-funded perk for the children of Avon Lake to enjoy the parks with a throwback style of entertainment featuring creativity and imagination.
According to Jacquie Hoffman, program director for Avon Lakes Parks and Recreation, the Greenbox program is designed to help children and parents alike find something fun and interactive to enjoy at the parks throughout the summer. The Greenbox typically kicks off in June and the initial crafts center around Father’s Day, then evolve as the summer progesses with many of the staples the parents and kids have come to expect. This includes making such things as keychains, friend bracelets, jigsaw animals and even bubble art. They have a Float a Boat, make their own boomerangs, do face painting, learn about lightning bugs and even have what can be described as a spa day for children – the ‘Treat Yo-Self Tuesday.
“It’s all about getting kids outside, really using their imagination and away from the cell phone and the television and the video games,” Roberts said. “It’s something fun to do, gets everyone out of the house and enjoying our beautiful parks. Parents can struggle to find things to do, and this makes it easy and the kids really look forward to it.
