It’s no easy task to plan and host a festival that attracts thousands of people every summer.
The North Ridgeville Corn Festival Committee has been planning for the 49th annual event set to take place the second weekend in August the minute last year’s festival ended. The festival takes place on Bainbridge Road along South Central Park.“The big thing is trying to gain volunteers,” said John Butkowski, president of the North Ridgeville Corn Festival Committee.
This year’s festival will have many of the same activities as in previous years including corn eating contests, live entertainment, parade, and fireworks. For those who keep asking why the festival no longer includes amusement rides, Butkowski provided a simple explanation. Another festival tradition is the announcement of the Golden Kernel Award. Since 1991, the award has been presented to North Ridgeville residents involved in the community, making it a better place to live. The North Ridgeville Corn Festival Committee reviews nominations, and the winners are announced on Friday at the North Ridgeville Corn Festival Opening Ceremonies. Last year’s winner was Ken Buescher.
“I believe it’ll be the first sauna house of this type and scale in North America,” Sheridan said in an email.Even without a festival this year, the public can still celebrate all things duck tape by participating in the Duck Tape Sculptures Scavenger Hunt. The theme for this year’s hunt is “Wild West.” From now through July 21 people can join the hunt to find 13 sculptures hidden at various locations around Avon and other areas on the westside.
