Forty-nine thousand teachers were hired across Texas public schools during the 2023-24 school year.
More than a third of the teachers hired across Texas public schools during the 2023-24 school were uncertified. AUSTIN, Texas — More than a third of them were uncertified, an all-time high, according to the Texas Education Agency, who testified before a House panel on Tuesday.
Kelvey Oeser, deputy commissioner of educator support at TEA, told the committee that some 49,000 teachers were hired statewide during the 2023-24 school year, with 16,600 being uncertified. Though TEA data show that uncertified teachers have made up a portion of recruitment for the last decade, that number has grown post-pandemic, including to a historic high of 34% last year.
