SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio officials are stepping up security for this year's Fiesta in response to recent high-profile incidents
Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff who overcame resistance to reshape the Roman Catholic Church, died on Easter Monday at 88.SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio officials are stepping up security for this year’s Fiesta in response to recent high-profile incidents, including aAnother top concern for organizers is keeping vehicles away from large crowds.
This comes after a vehicle attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year's Day. "We live in a world today where we can't take safety for granted anymore," said Trish DeBerry, President of Centro San Antonio. After those events, she said leaders had several discussions about how to keep Fiesta-goers safe, especially downtown.“We’ve doubled down on that part of our security, having seen what’s been going on in the last year or so," said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.McManus says physical blockades and personnel will be used to block off popular gathering spots.“During Fiesta, those will be powered up,” DeBerry said. Centro San Antonio will activate its downtown camera network during peak hours of the celebration. That means anyone in the area is likely to be monitored by multiple surveillance points. “Whether it’s a deterrent for criminal behavior, or if something happens, we’re gonna be laser-focused in trying to be able to apprehend the person responsible,” DeBerry added. “So I think they’ll be incredibly helpful.” Large events like Fiesta de los Reyes will also be more spread out this year. The festivities will now be split between Market Square and Milam Park, with controlled entrances and security screenings.“We’ll have drones up at all our events, watching,” McManus confirmed. City leaders say the new safety protocols have already proven successful at other large gatherings like the MLK March and the NCAA Final Four — and they’re hopeful the enhanced security will keep Fiesta celebratory and safe.Downtown camera program
