"I'm not questing the integrity of the report that parliamentarians have put forward. I think the judgment is pretty harsh, but I'm not questioning the integrity of those people."Tory MPs – including the prime minister - will today decide whether to turn up to Parliament and vote to approve the sanction meted out to Boris Johnson for deliberately misleading the House on multiple occasions.
Another backer, the Conservative backbencher Peter Bone, who cannot attend today's vote, told me last night that while he disagreed with the report and sanction, if Boris Johnson was denied a parliamentary pass, he may"get a media pass instead". This morning, Sir Keir Starmer told Sky News that he would be"supporting the committee" and its conclusions and that it's important to know where the prime minister stands.
But if he doesn't show up, he can be branded weak. Any MP can force a division by shouting"no" when asked to approve the report, and Labour are mulling over whether it is in their interests to flush out which way Tories are voting, so the danger has not entirely passed. The 57-year-old was suspended from the party in April 2022 pending the outcome of an Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme investigation into the allegations.
Sir Keir Starmer told BBC Radio 4's Today programme:"There are other opportunities but Tony Blair didn't have a resignation list. It is very hard to justify. “Why on earth didn't Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, take the provisional list from Boris Johnson and say 'Thank you very much, I will put that on one side and I'll come to it and look at it when I know the findings of the privileges committee'?
"The argument that [issuing new oil and gas licences] in itself would reduce bills obviously isn't true, otherwise we'd have lower bills now," he said. Sir Keir also told Sky News he's not going to"shy away" from advocating for more onshore wind farms, despite likely local opposition, saying if they had been built years ago, energy bills would not have shot up the way they have.He added he wants to work with local communities to decide where wind farms go.Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said that immediate help is needed for people struggling with the huge rise in the cost of mortgages, as well as long-term solutions.
