The victim told police someone knocked on his car window and then shot him; he drove to McDonald's in Pacific Beach seeking help
A 79-year-old man sitting in a parked car near a Bay Ho office building was fatally shot in his upper torso early Tuesday by a gunman who knocked on his car window and then fired, authorities said.
Police said the man was sitting in his car on Morena Boulevard, on the north side of Interstate 5, south of Costco, when someone walked up to his car, knocked on his window and shot him shortly after 5:10 a.m. The suspect then walked away from the scene, police reported. The victim drove about two miles to a fast-food restaurant in Pacific Beach to seek help after the shooting, which was reported shortly after 5:10 a.m. The man suffered “through-and-through” gunshot wounds to his upper torso and upper arms, said San Diego police Officer David O’Brien.
Officers flagged down by McDonald’s employees rendered emergency aid. Paramedics arrived and transported the man to a hospital, where he died, homicide Lt. Jud Campbell told OnScene TV. The man had been outside an office building on Morena Boulevard where he worked when he was shot, Campbell said. TV news footage showed the man’s gray SUV — its driver’s side door open — parked in front of the McDonald’s restaurant on Mission Bay Drive near Garnet Avenue.
