Brezjana Wilson, 29, is accused of two separate crimes: a daring rooftop burglary at the North Face outlet in Berkeley and an arson at a Target store in Emeryville. Police believe the same woman was responsible for both incidents. Wilson is currently out on her own recognizance and is expected to enter a plea in court on February 28.
A police report details a daring heist reminiscent of a movie script. At 2:22 am on January 11, 2024, an unidentified woman accessed the North Face outlet on Fifth Street in Berkeley by opening a sealed skylight on the roof. She rappelled down a support beam, secured herself with gear, and safely reached the store floor. Methodically, she gathered approximately $20,000 worth of clothing and merchandise, then pried open a door and escaped.
Two months prior to this burglary, police believe the same woman committed a heist at a Target store in Emeryville. In this incident, she employed a more straightforward approach, gathering desired items and then setting a fire before fleeing through an emergency exit. Although it took over a year, prosecutors claim to have identified the perpetrator of both incidents. Last month, they filed arson charges against 29-year-old Brezjana Wilson from Sacramento. Wilson, with a prior conviction for grand theft, has been released on her own recognizance for both cases, pending her compliance with court orders.Police allege that Wilson made a crucial error during the Berkeley burglary: she left behind a screwdriver. Investigators were able to match DNA found on the tool to Wilson. In the arson case, she was recognized by a loss prevention investigator, Michael Mortimer, who identified similarities to a previous theft/arson incident in Lathrop. Upon arrest last week, Wilson reportedly confessed to starting the fire at the Target and participating in the Berkeley burglary. According to police records, she claimed to have acted as a lookout for two unidentified accomplices who entered the store, warning them about the presence of Berkeley police. Prosecutors, however, contend that Wilson's role extended beyond that of a lookout, asserting that she extensively searched the store after rappelling in from the ceiling. They acknowledge the presence of two other unidentified accomplices who assisted in the burglary, as stated in a probable cause statement filed in court. Wilson's next court date is scheduled for February 28, where she is expected to enter a plea
