A man broke into the Gurnee-area home of a female acquaintance Sunday night and battered her before he was apprehended by officers and a police dog, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.
Arriving officers found the woman, 36, who said Simmons, a former acquaintance, forced entry into her home, took her phone and struck her in the face and neck. Simmons fled as officers arrived, the woman told police.Police located Simmons’ vehicle about a block away, and a police canine, Dax, was brought in. The dog tracked Simmons for about a mile, locating him hiding in the three seasons room of a residence.
Simmons punched the dog, who was unfazed, police said. Simmons was taken to a hospital for treatment of his bite. He was then turned over to the sheriff’s office. In addition to the felony counts, Simmons was charged with misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and striking a police dog. “If it were not for the quick thinking of the victim’s friend, this situation could have ended much differently,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “I am proud of the work of our patrol division and Sheriff’s K9 Team who worked quickly to locate and apprehend this violent offender.”
