Police dogs were also used in part of the investigation
Officers, including forensics and armed police, were spotted carrying out searches on Old Hall Lane and Austin Close in Kirkby, which is close to St Chads Church. The area was cordoned off as police dogs helped with the incident.
Police have now confirmed that they were responding to calls, at around 3.40pm, that ammunition had been left and armed officers attended the scene. With the help of police dogs, ammunition was found behind a wall and it was forensically recovered.Detective Inspector John Mullen said: "Thankfully we were able to seize the ammunition before it ended up in the hands of criminals.
"Sadly, we all know the devastating consequences of gun crime in Merseyside and how it brings misery to our communities. We are in the early stages of investigating this incident and would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
