In a community conversation on Sunday, the Alaska Black Caucus invited APD police Chief Designee Bianca Cross to share insight on the city’s safety and needed policy changes.
Cross began by sharing her background and story to those in attendance. She was born in Philadelphia, has lived in Alaska for more than three decades and has worked for the Anchorage Police Department more than two and a half decades.
“I have to say that I have spoken with some people who work at the department and they have told me stories that have kind of made my jaw drop,” Cross said. “So, I’m not going to say that there’s not racism within the department, I’m not going to say that those people haven’t experienced those things. I believe racism is an ignorance problem.
Cross said they’ve had retention trouble with people going through police training and leaving for other department in other places with better retirement and benefits. She also said it’s hard to retain people from the lower 48. When asked about racial profiling, Cross said she recognizes there has been racial profiling in Anchorage and wants to see police and the community have a better relationship.
