A recent update to Pokemon GO has caused a significant drop in wild Pokemon spawns, particularly in rural areas and away from PokeStops. Players are expressing frustration, and Niantic is investigating the issue.
Initially, the game's core gameplay revolved around finding wild Pokemon primarily near PokeStops and Gyms. This posed a significant challenge for players residing in rural areas or those with mobility limitations, hindering their enjoyment of the game. Over the years, Niantic has implemented substantial enhancements to foster a more inclusive experience for at-home play.
Adventure Sync streamlined the egg-hatching process during daily activities, and Remote Raids facilitated participation in battles from the comfort of one's home. While the game still emphasizes outdoor exploration, it has expanded ways to enjoy it away from PokeStops and Gyms. Players in remote areas and those who often play from home were able to catch Pokemon. I personally experienced this, as numerous Pokemon appeared on my screen when I launched the app from my rural residence. I've even caught debut Pokemon at home, which was impossible until recently. However, many players have recently observed alterations in the mobile game. These changes appear to be linked to a January 6th update, which preceded the Pinch Perfect event. Such updates are a regular occurrence, but this one has generated considerable concern for two primary reasons. Firstly, it marked the official removal of the McDonald’s-sponsored Gyms, which have now disappeared from the map. Secondly, it seems to have significantly reduced the frequency of wild Pokemon spawns, especially in areas lacking PokeStops. \Players across Reddit and other social media platforms have reported the sudden scarcity of wild spawns. Many players are now only seeing one or two Pokemon on the map when opening the game. Before the update, opening the game often displayed half a dozen or more Pokemon, even in rural locations. This change has drawn criticism from players, including myself, who do not frequently venture into more populated areas. Players have contacted Niantic support, hoping that this issue is a temporary glitch. Initially, responses provided troubleshooting advice. However, Niantic has since acknowledged the issue, stating that their team is “currently investigating this issue.” It remains unclear whether the vanishing spawns are a glitch or an intentional reduction in the spawn rate. Niantic has been known to adjust the pool of wild Pokemon and spawn rates. Nevertheless, the substantial decrease in numbers is definitely not ideal for those who are not often near PokeStops. Considering that Niantic is apparently investigating the matter, player feedback might influence their actions. However, the Niantic Support account has not yet made any public statements about whether they plan to change the reduced spawn rates. \The game's original design focused on encouraging real-world interaction and outdoor play. Its initial success saw players enthusiastically exploring the novelty of encountering Pokemon in their physical environment. However, this model has presented challenges for specific player groups from the beginning. When I lived in the city, I didn’t have any problem, I could step out my apartment door and find several Pokemon stops, with Pokemon nearby. But not everyone has that option, and it limits the fun of playing the game. During 2020, Niantic sought to balance the original “get out and play” model with support for rural and at-home players. Features like the possibility of trading, allowed by the late last year update. Until very recently, the trading of Pokemon was only possible in person. For those living far away from other players, this was a big issue. The update that took place late last year looked like a huge step forward for rural players. It’s a bit tricky to use in practice, but the option does at least exist now… in theory. The increased rate of wild Pokemon in more remote areas encouraged many players, including myself, to feel that Niantic was finally listening to the community feedback. I recall the day I opened my app and saw my avatar surrounded by wild Pokemon, even at home. This motivated me to regularly open the game. Now, after just a few days of significantly reduced spawns, myself and many other players who live in more remote areas are already disengaging from the game. There will still be issues with balancing play for remote and in-person players. But in this case, suddenly seeing fewer Pokemon on the map again feels like a major step back, and one that doesn’t have a clear reason behind it.
