For the second straight season and the third time in four years, Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s basketball season has ended in the NCAA Division II West Regional final. Undefeated Cal State East Bay defeated PLNU 73-58 Monday night on the Pioneers’ home court in Hayward to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight next week in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Cal State East Bay is 33-0. Point Loma Nazarene finished the season 27-6. PLNU finished the season as the PacWest Conference Tournament champions and regular season champions. PLNU led Monday night’s game 31-30 at halftime. But CSEB took the lead in the first minute of the second half, went on a 10-0 run and never trailed again. PLNU was down 61-54 with 1:39 to play when point guard Jaden Matingou fouled out. CSEB finished on a 9-0 run. Forward Andrew Nagy led PLNU with 15 points and nine rebounds and finished the three-game West Regionals with 58 points and 24 rebounds. Matingou scored 13 points but turned the ball over nine times. Caden Harris and Tyce Paulsen each scored 11. Harris also had six rebounds and finished the Regionals with 42 points, 16 rebounds and eight steals.Nagy and Harris were named to the all-tourney team. Nagy, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, led PLNU on the season with 15.5 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. Junior Matingou averaged 11.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.
