‘It’s going to be bit of a mess again’: New atmospheric river storm barrels toward Bay Area, signaling yet another wet weekend
The Express is on course to hit the central California coast, and it is expected to leave a wide swath. The weather service forecast between 1½ and 3 inches of rain for most urban parts of the Bay Area, with lesser amounts expected in the South Bay and about 2 inches expected in San Francisco and northern sections of the East Bay. Rainfall could total 8 to 10 inches in parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Utility provider Pacific Gas & Electric said it was mobilizing workers ahead of the storm to prepare for expected problems caused by flooding, fallen trees and power lines. More than 100,000 customers lost power during the late February storms; although service was restored in hours or days for most residents, some isolated communities were in the dark for a week or longer.
Another problem: Ground that already is super saturated will begin to turn into run-off, increasing the chances of landslides. Houses located on hillsides could be particularly at risk.
