The National Weather Service warned of increasing potential for heavy rain and strong gusts of wind, which are forecast to follow a period of light scattered showers by the end of the week.

It’s still too soon to tell how much rain will fall, but people should start to see some precipitation by late Thursday morning, which is expected to gradually spread throughout the Bay Area later that afternoon, Behringer said. Minor flooding is also in the cards; while meteorologists are still determining the extent and exact locations of the flooding, they should have more information in the coming days. Gusts of wind could reach 30 to 45 mph or higher.

“Really, Thursday night into Friday morning will be the bulk of it, the heaviest,” Behringer said. “We could be looking at copious amounts of rainfall, especially among the coastal ranges.” There’s a possibility the Bay Area could experience a period of rainfall similar to some of the atmospheric river events seen in January, but the difference is that those storm systems occurred back to back. Behringer said it’s not yet clear whether the wet pattern will persist through next week; the signal is there, but the details are murky.

Quick video briefing on increasing potential for an atmospheric river and associated impacts from rain, wind, and thunderstorms later this week. Keep up with forecast changes and stay safe!
