A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition has sparked debate about the potential impact of plant-based milk consumption on mental health . The study, conducted by the UK Biobank, analyzed data from 350,000 participants over a 13-year period and found that individuals who drank dairy-free milk alternatives had a 14% increased risk of developing depression compared to those who consumed dairy milk. However, Dr.

Roxanne Becker, a medical editor and educator at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, who was not involved in the study, pointed out several limitations. She argued that the increased risk observed in plant-based milk drinkers could be attributed to other factors not adequately accounted for in the analysis, such as total calorie intake. Dr. Becker noted that when calorie intake was considered, the association between plant-based milk and depression risk disappeared. Additionally, she highlighted that the study did not differentiate between underweight and normal weight individuals, raising concerns about the possibility of including individuals with eating disorders who might be using plant-based milks for calorie control. Eating disorders are known to be linked with both anxiety and depression. Dr. Chris Scuderi, a family physician, emphasized the importance of a balanced diet for overall well-being, regardless of dietary choices. He recommended incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein sources while limiting processed foods, red meats, and sugar.
