Springbok World Cup winner Pieter-Steph du Toit’s apparent indecision over whether to continue playing rugby in South Africa or do so abroad won’t look good among his embattled colleagues, whose Covid-19 coronavirus-enforced pay cuts kick in at month-end.
As things stood yesterday afternoon , the World player of the year’s contract had been “cancelled under the Covid-19 collective industry contract”, according to a source who declined to be named.
But, as was reported a couple of weeks ago, the 27-year-old’s head appears to have been turned by a stupendous offer, which may have been only verbal, from French club Montpellier. It would see him pocket about R75 million over three years. Negotiations are going reasonably well, but there’s also the principle of how much you try to help one player at the expense of the othersProvince, who haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory over the past three weeks – by trying to be the only union to back out of the nationwide agreement for pay cuts and allegedly reacting late to Du Toit’s request – apparently have a moral issue over the player’s plan.
While no one would fault him for being in demand enough to attract Montpellier’s attention, as Lions players Malcolm Marx and Tyrone Green did and cashed in this week, for Du Toit to stay in South Africa and look to get an increase – when the other players have been asked to show solidarity by taking pay cuts – would be seen to be beyond the pale.
