Two Chinese warships encircled Japan's southwestern islands over the past week as Beijing continued to expand its naval fleet operations beyond a strategic choke point surrounding its nearby waters.On Thursday, the Joint Staff Office under Japan's Defense Ministry reported the recent movement of China's naval vessels inside the Japanese exclusive economic zone in the East China Sea and the Philippine Sea, an area that extends 200 nautical miles beyond its territorial sea.
The Type 052D destroyer is one of the Chinese navy's major surface combatants in service. It has a full load displacement of 7,500 tons and is armed with a naval main gun and various missiles.The Nanjing and Lishui were spotted by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force again on Wednesday, when they passed between the Japanese islands of Amami Oshima and Yokoate-jima, returning to the East China Sea and heading back to the mainland after six days of sailing in the Philippine Sea.
