Royal photographer Chris Jackson recalls what it is like to photograph Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis

This week on Royally Us, royal photographer Chris Jackson dishes on what it’s really like photographing the royal children —- Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. “We don't really get the opportunity to photograph the children very often, which is great, because it makes it all the more special,” Jackson tells Us while promoting his new book, Modern Majesty: The British Royal Family Today.

“Trooping the Colour is an event that's really important in the diary and you see the children grow up over the years, and you look back, and it's kind of like a touch point for the family on the balcony, things change, the children grow.” He adds, “It's always really exciting when you do get to photograph them and there's always something a little bit unexpected and fun.” The Getty Images photog has captured Prince Louis, 7, most mischievous and memorable moments at royal events over the years, but his favorite occurred during the 2025 Trooping the Colour. “You are just chuckling behind the long lens on the balcony because he was waving at the crowd and they were waving at him, and he was waving at them, and you could see him getting hyped up,” Jackson explains. “So, he'd wave, and they'd all cheer, and he'd wave, and he could see the response, he was loving it and everyone's laughing around him. It's a lovely photo of him in the middle of his family.” Jackson shares hundreds of images of the royal family over the years in his book, from state visits to quiet, relaxed moments with King Charles III at his Highgrove House. “King Charles in Highgrove feeding his chickens, these are a million miles away from the pomp and the ceremony of royal engagements,” Jackson says. “But also, what they do is enable the royals to relax, take a step back, and then come back with a renewed energy to royal engagements. Those are the environments they definitely feel most relaxed, but you don't often get the opportunity to photograph them in places like that.”
