A woman fell victim to a horrifying and unusual scam in Mayfield Heights. According to the police report, she lost nearly $6,000 to fraudsters over the phone and the criminals even convinced her to strip down on camera.

“There is spoofing for caller IDs,” said Sheryl Harris, Director of the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs and the Scam Squad. “It’s illegal, but of course, scammers are doing all sorts of illegal things, so anytime someone contacts you about a problem, even if you get a text phone call, it doesn’t matter. Just hang up the phone and think about how you could independently verify what they’re saying. So, you might log into your bank account.
The woman stayed on the phone with the crook and went to the Huntington Bank in Mayfield Heights and withdrew $6,000 in cash.The caller told her to tap the Chase debit card on her Apple wallet at the ATM transferring nearly $6,000 into an unknown checking account. When she got home the same man posing as a bank employee called her on Facetime. She said he told her they needed to do a full body scan to verify her identity due to a failed transaction. The woman told police she undressed and spun in circles on Facetime. When she heard the scammer laughing that’s when she realized it was all a hoax.She also went to the chase back in Lyndhurst to try and take the money out she had just deposited but it was too late.
