The city of Philadelphia is set to open a new drug treatment facility adjacent to the city's jail complex . The facility, called the Riverview Wellness Village, will initially be able to accommodate around 120 patients. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and Managing Director Adam Thiel are scheduled to announce the opening at a news conference in Northeast Philadelphia on Wednesday.
The facility, formerly a city-run personal care home, is expected to undergo construction for at least two more years, with the goal of eventually treating over 600 people simultaneously. The city currently contracts with approximately two dozen recovery houses, providing about 500 beds. Mayor Parker has prioritized improving the quality of life in the neighborhood surrounding the jail complex, and she is expected to share details about patient referrals to Riverview. The opening of this facility comes amidst debate surrounding the city's practice of arresting individuals for drug use and offering them treatment and diversion programs. Advocates have voiced concerns about this approach, arguing that people struggling with addiction who are already on probation or have outstanding warrants could end up in jail instead of receiving treatment
