Dauphin Island wrapped up the first part of a dune restoration project that would make the island’s East End Beach 350 feet wider.

) - Good news for the town of Dauphin Island! Mayor Jeff Collier says they’ve wrapped up the first part of a dune restoration project that would make the island’s East End Beach 350 feet wider.

“…essentially put 1.1 million cubic yards of sand on about a mile stretch of the East end of Dauphin Island,” Collier explains. The project was started to fix an area of the beach that degraded over the years as a result of storms and other issues. “The only remaining part is going to come in in about the next month or month and a half and we got to do a lot of planting sea oats and other coastal and dune vegetation to try to help make sure the sand stays in place and grow dunes and create habitats and create habitats for birds and other critters,” Collier adds.“We want people to see Dauphin Island as a great Island is a great place to go and enjoy fun and have time with their families.
