According to the agency, the XBF is a recombinant sublineage of Omicron BA.5 and BA2.75 which has been associated with recent case increases in Australia and Sweden.
It is also currently classified as an Omicron Subvariant under monitoring by the World Health Organization. “However, the local sample was detected at a time when the variant was not yet classified as a VUM ,” the DOH explained. “Further, global experts are still characterizing the variant in terms of transmissibility, immune evasion, and ability to cause more severe disease,” it added.
The DOH then reminded the public that as variants are expected to continue emerging, they should continue wearing layers of protection and to also receive anti-COVID vaccination and booster shots.Subscribe to our daily newsletter
